What Are “Phonons” in Quantum Theory?
Dear reader,
here I try to translate the language of quantum theory into my own way of “seeing & understanding” and to work with analogous images. Further below I have also included the current scientific definition. Thank you very much for your interest, and enjoy discovering,
Yours, Werner Habermeier
Phonons are transitions into the quantum field.
In the quantum field “dwells” the “organizing matrix”. In the language of Rupert Sheldrake, this is a morphic structure: a self-sustaining, information-based field pattern that is stabilized through repetition. The blueprint for matter.
Phonons stabilize or enable this transition.
In the quantum field they encounter the organizing matrix of the destroyed element or crystal.
This also means that the blueprint for a human stem cell, for example, is located in the quantum field. Wherever a new human being, a new body grows – there is a connection to this blueprint, and the cell grows according to this plan.
There, an imprint in quantum space exists or arises – a field signature.
Especially in the case of superconducting crystals, this imprint acts in a coherent, structure-giving and transcendent way.
In the case of a superconducting crystal, something extraordinary happens:
- The vibration is no longer disturbed (no resistance).
- This means: the information remains coherent. A “dedicated line” into the quantum field.
- The crystal becomes a resonant transmitter in the field.
- One could say: the crystal “carries its own song” into the quantum field, and does so without distortion. It keeps the connection open, and a person can more easily go “there” – spiritually.
“Phonons” are gates – but not gates in space.
They are gates in state, in order, in the movement of matter.
They connect:
- between electrons that could otherwise not touch
- between vibration and bonding
- between energy and form
It is not the window that is the gate,
but the gaze through it.
It is not the phonon that is the thing,
but the field of motion that creates the connection.
The Crystal as a Being – Its Song in the Field
When a crystal vibrates coherently,
the quantum field begins to sing along.
The phonons are its voice,
the lattice its instrument,
the quantum field its resonance chamber.
And what arises is more than matter –
it is a conscious form, an energetic signature field.
The superconducting crystal “forgets” its separateness.
It begins to remember itself as a field.
In this sense:
phonons are not mere units of vibration but carriers of possibility.
They open gates because they inform, interconnect and stabilize the field.

Scientifically Precise: What Is a Phonon?
A phonon is a quasiparticle-like, quantized model of lattice vibration.
A phonon is the quantized* vibration of an atom (or a group of atoms) in a crystalline solid.
(*Quantized = stepped like a staircase, not smooth like a ramp.
Analogy:
Imagine a slot machine wheel: you can only win whole euro amounts (€1, €2, €3 …) – never €1.37 or €2.84.
The wheel jumps from step to step; nothing is allowed between the steps. This is how energy, light or vibrations behave at the quantum level: they can only take on certain packet sizes (quanta) – nothing in between. – Ah, this is where natural geometry and natural proportions come into play … )
A Closer Look:
- Atoms in a crystal lattice are not at rest; they vibrate – even at absolute zero they still move slightly (zero-point motion).
- These vibrations can propagate through the lattice – like waves.
- Phonons are the smallest possible energy units of these vibrations – also the “quanta” of lattice vibration.
- They behave similarly to particles but are collective movements – not particles with mass, but packets of information & energy in the lattice.
An Analogy: The Water Surface
- Imagine a calm water surface.
- You let a drop fall – waves spread out concentrically.
- Each wave crest is part of the collective movement, not a single particle – yet it carries momentum and acting force.
The phonon is like a standing wave in the sea of the lattice –
a moment of perceptible movement, born from the whole.
Why Are “Phonons” So Important in the Explanatory Model of Quantum Physics?
- They explain heat conduction in solids
- They are the glue for Cooper pairs → without them, no superconductivity
- They influence the electrical, thermal and optical properties of materials
- They show: matter is alive – even on an apparent level
An observed property was taken and given a name, as if it were a particle.
